Casella di testo: Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte

The OAC is still placed on the Hill of Miradois and occupies the same rooms which were inaugurated in 1819. It is crowded with researchers, students and technicians, together with numerous computers, sophisticated laboratory equipment, instruments used to observe the sky and promote scientific education and popularisation.
At the OAC, studies on the solar machine, (which is a real laboratory of modern physics, and its surrounding environment) in particular on comets and cosmic dust - are carried out; the properties and the evolutionary processes of the stars are investigated; galaxies are observed to discover both their visible and obscure components, their interactions and aggregation, to measure their distance and to throw light upon how the universe evolved throughout the last 15 billion years.
The OAC astronomers have access to the biggest optical telescopes on Earth and also use instruments on board satellites such as the Hubble Space Telescope or the x-rays telescope Beppo SAX; their experiments are performed from space probes such as Cassini and Rosetta.
Furthermore, thanks to an intense technologic activity, the OAC has created its own observation station on the top of Toppo di Castelgrande (Potenza), with a 160 cm mirror telescope, entirely designed by OAC engineers.
In less than one year, a new generation telescope with a 2.6m mirror, which has been conceived, designed and built in Campania with the collaboration of the European Observatory of the South, will peer into the sky from the prestigious Cerro Paranal (Chile). Called VST, this instrument will find the targets for the VLT (Very Large Telescope), the biggest telescope of the world.
